Two DRAFT options of the 2017-2018 calendar were recently available for consideration. These second draft options were created based upon feedback from the public, and the recommendations were reviewed with Instructional Supervisors, Principals, and from teacher representatives serving as members of the Teacher Roundtable.
Both draft calendar options are pre-Labor Day start calendars. In August, Maryland's Governor, Larry Hogan, issued an Executive Order that required all public schools in the state to open for the school year no earlier than Labor Day and adjourn for the year no later than June 15th. This Executive Order also allowed for local Boards of Education to apply for a waiver from the post-Labor Day start and/or the June 15th end date. Allegany County Public Schools has applied for a waiver from the post-Labor Day start.
A brief survey was open from December 22nd through January 5th to select either Option 1 (Schools open August 22, 2017) or Option 2 (Schools open August 29, 2017) of the 2017-2018 school calendar. Results of the survey will be provided to the Board of Education for a final vote.
