 TIPS TO HELP STUDENTS SUCCEED:
Developing Strong Study Skills to Succeed in School

  • Consider Working with others. While distractions are bad in a study environment, studying in a group or pair can be very useful, as long as everyone involved is focused on studying.
  • Develop reading, math, and writing skills through practice.  For example, if you are struggling with multiplication and/or division, spend 10-15 minutes each night practicing.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to study.  Set aside a period of time each night to study and review your work.
  • Focus on the subject areas that need the most attention.
  • Pay attention in class and take good notes.
  • Using clear headers to organize information when note taking and write neatly.  You will become confused and upset if you can’t read your notes.
  • Develop a calm attitude by being patient with yourself as you review the material.
  • Create an appropriate study environment that is quiet and free from distractions.
  • Developing effective study skills in middle school is a wise move in preparation for high school.
  • As you move on through life, the study skills you've developed in middle school will be useful to you.

Middle school is recognized by educators as a critical period in a student's life.  School work is becoming more difficult because assignments are more involved and abstract, and students are being asked to use higher order thinking skills.   Develop the skills needed to absorb and apply information in class by reporting to class with materials, paying attention to classroom directions, completing assignments on time, asking questions, and studying.
