The information below pertains to the ACPS Winter Operations, including details on how decisions are made regarding school schedules during inclement weather and the possibility of utilizing virtual learning days.

Procedures

How Decisions Are Made

3:30 AM ASSESSMENT*

National Weather Service, AccuWeather and Weather Channel forecasts are reviewed. Road conditions are assessed in person. State and county roadway divisions may be contacted in advance of severe weather event.

5:00 AM COORDINATION

District and county response plans are coordinated with the Superintendent.

5:30-6:00 AM CONTACT

 

Decisions to delay or close are shared with families, staff and media through School Messenger calls, emails or texts. If in effect, Virtual Learning is announced, with schedules posted at acpsmd.org.

5:30 AM WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA

Decisions are posted at acpsmd.org and on ACPS’ social media channels (Facebook, Instagram & X).

7-7:30 AM CONTACT, WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA

A Delay-to-Closure may be announced if conditions worsen, using the steps above. If in effect, Delay-to-Closure virtual learning is announced - schedules posted at acpsmd.org.

11 AM EARLY DISMISSAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Early dismissal decisions are shared by 11 AM with families, staff and media through School Messenger, with updates posted at acpsmd.org and on ACPS social media.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS

  • Student and bus driver safety
  • Road conditions and weather predictions
  • Air temperature at or below 0°F
  • Sustained wind chill of -15°F or below

* If and when conditions exist, a decision to delay or close will be made the night before.
