Why Pursue National Board Certification?
National Board State and Local Incentive Program:
Maryland provides full fee support for National Board Certification (NBC) for Maryland public school teachers who meet certain eligibility requirements (see below). Teachers who are interested in pursuing NBC should contact Chris Cassell [email protected]), ACPS National Board Coordinator, or Ethan Devore ([email protected]), ACPS National Board Facilitator.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Meet the definition of "teacher" as stated in MD. Ed. Article 6-1001.
- Meet the definition of "nonclassroom teacher" as stated in MD. Ed. Article 6-1012.
- Hold a Bachelor degree from an accredited institution. (*Candidates for the Career and Technical Education National Board certificate are not required to hold a bachelor degree).
- Have three years of successful teaching at one or more early childhood, elementary, middle, or secondary schools.
- Hold a valid Maryland professional teaching certificate.
Additional Information:
- Participation in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification process is voluntary.
- The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future currently provides career advancement opportunities and potential salary increases for teachers who are Nationally Board Certified.
- All candidates must be compliant with all deadlines specified by the NBPTS and the Maryland State Department of Education.
- Teachers participating in the program must attempt all four components of National Board candidacy within three years.
- Teachers who do not attempt all four components of the National Board certification process within three years will be removed from candidacy by the National Board, and must reimburse the state the full amount of funding received.
- Teachers who attempt all four components within three years and do not achieve National Board certification are NOT subject to repayment.
