Maintenance and Construction
The maintenance and construction department is responsible for the development and oversight of the Five-Year Master Plan for Facilities. A requirement of MSDE, the funding to achieve the goals in the plan is obtained through collaboration with Maryland's Interagency Committee on School Construction. The maintenance and construction department is responsible for routine maintenance and improvements on existing properties operated by the Allegany County Board of Education. The responsibilities of our maintenance department extend to 22 school sites, the transportation offices, the warehouse, and the central office.
Asbestos Management
In October 1987, the U.S. Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). Under this law, comprehensive regulations were developed to address required schools to inspect for friable and non-friable asbestos, develop asbestos management plans, address asbestos hazards in school buildings, and implement response actions in a timely manner. These regulations assign school systems many responsibilities. The Allegany County Board of Education’s program for fulfilling these responsibilities is outlined in the AHERA Management Plan. The plan contains information on the school’s inspection results, re-inspection, and related material to meet the requirements of AHERA. The AHERA Management Plan for each school can be viewed at individual schools during normal school hours. The plan will also be available at the office of the Asbestos Coordinator for review. Jay Marley is responsible for the administration and supervision of the facilities and grounds maintenance of the Allegany County Public School System, including project programming, budgeting, and adherence to Board policies and procedures overseeing facilities.
